DMK working president M.K. Stalin sharply criticized the AIADMK administration and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on April 8, 2017, for leaving Tamil Nadu trapped in severe drinking water distress due to absolute inaction on new water supply schemes. Stalin observed that during Panneerselvam's ministerial tenures, the government failed to conceptualize, fund, or execute vital desalination, river-linking, or piped rural water supply projects. As a direct consequence of this governing negligence, millions of families were enduring acute water shortages during peak summer.
Stalin recalled that previous DMK administrations under Dr. M. Karunanidhi had systematically executed monumental drinking water infrastructure, including the Hogenakkal Combined Water Supply Project, Chennai Water Desalination Plants, and the Veeranam initiative. In sharp contrast, the ruling party neglected water conservation, lake restoration, and pipeline modernization over six long years. Stalin noted that rural women and urban households were forced to spend hard-earned money buying private tanker water.
The opposition leader affirmed that the DMK places water security and public health at the pinnacle of its governance agenda. He demanded urgent relief measures for parched communities across Tamil Nadu.
