DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed deep disappointment on April 10, 2017, after the Election Commission cancelled the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar by-election, underscoring that the commission held complete constitutional powers to conduct a fair and free election. Stalin noted that cancelling the entire democratic exercise penalized innocent voters and lawful candidates rather than punishing those who engaged in corrupt electoral practices. He argued that the poll authority should have disqualified corrupt operatives instead of calling off the vote.

Stalin explained that the Election Commission possessed extensive administrative apparatus, central paramilitary forces, and full statutory authority under Article 324 to maintain order and stop money distribution. By opting for cancellation instead of decisive disciplinary action against guilty ministers, the commission sent a disheartening signal to law-abiding citizens. The opposition leader pointed out that the DMK campaign remained fully transparent, lawful, and focused purely on public development issues throughout the constituency.

Stalin called on statutory authorities to take immediate punitive measures against ruling party violators. He reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently champion democratic values, electoral purity, and constitutional propriety across Tamil Nadu.
