DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound outrage on April 11, 2017, condemning the brutal police assault on peaceful women and citizens demonstrating against a TASMAC liquor outlet in Samalapuram, Tiruppur district. Stalin described the shocking visuals of a senior police officer physically assaulting a defenseless woman protester as an intolerable atrocity that brought shame upon Tamil Nadu's law enforcement apparatus. He demanded the immediate suspension and criminal prosecution of the responsible police official.
Stalin stated that the residents of Samalapuram were exercising their democratic right to peaceful assembly to protect their neighborhood, children, and families from the social hazards of a newly opened liquor shop. Instead of engaging with community leaders, the district police responded with unprovoked violence, unleashing lathi-charges on women and senior citizens. This excessive brutality reflected a state administration that viewed its own citizens as adversaries while serving as a protective enforcement arm for commercial liquor sales.
The opposition leader demanded that the state government immediately shut down the contested Samalapuram liquor shop and provide medical compensation to the injured. Stalin warned that the DMK would intensify protests across western Tamil Nadu if the government failed to discipline abusive police officers.
