DMK working president M.K. Stalin submitted a formal memorandum to the Governor of Tamil Nadu on April 12, 2017, demanding that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and cabinet ministers named in income tax raid documents be directed to resign immediately. Stalin noted that official raid reports and seized distribution ledgers had explicitly named key ministers, including the Health Minister and the Chief Minister himself, in connection with illicit financial transactions totaling over eighty-nine crore rupees.
Stalin asserted that retaining public office while facing serious allegations of financial corruption and electoral subversion violated the basic canons of constitutional morality. An administration whose leadership is heavily compromised loses the moral authority to formulate public policy or direct law enforcement. He argued that allowing implicated ministers to remain in power created an unacceptable conflict of interest, enabling them to exert undue influence over ongoing inquiries and intimidate potential witnesses within state departments.
The opposition leader stressed that the Governor was constitutionally obligated to protect democratic norms and prevent the abuse of state machinery. Stalin warned that if the state leadership refused to step down voluntarily, the DMK would mobilize statewide democratic agitations to demand their immediate removal.
