DMK working president M.K. Stalin addressed a massive public meeting in Chennai on April 13, 2017, demanding stringent legal and penal action against Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and state ministers for engaging in unprecedented corrupt practices during the R.K. Nagar by-election campaign. Stalin detailed evidence unearthed during income tax searches, which documented systematic plans by the ruling party to distribute hundreds of crores of rupees to purchase voters.
Stalin argued that the brazen abuse of state power, deployment of senior ministers as ward-level cash distribution managers, and misuse of administrative machinery represented an assault on free and fair democratic elections. Rather than presenting policy accomplishments or seeking a genuine democratic mandate, the ruling dispensation treated the electorate as a commodity to be bought. He stated that the Election Commission's decision to rescind the bypoll proved the gravity of the malpractices, requiring direct criminal prosecution of all implicated leaders.
The opposition leader praised DMK cadres and vigilant citizens for documenting and exposing illicit cash operations on the ground. Stalin declared that the DMK would relentlessly pursue the matter in the courts and before the public, ensuring that democracy is defended against money power.
