DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound shock and indignation on April 14, 2017, over the state government's callous attitude toward rising farmer suicides across Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that it was unconscionable for an elected administration to treat the tragic deaths of farmers caused by severe drought, crop failure, and crushing rural debt as if they were merely an unavoidable stroke of personal fate. He condemned the government's passive posture in the face of ongoing agrarian devastation.
Stalin emphasized that the agrarian crisis was an unprecedented man-made and natural calamity requiring proactive, compassionate state intervention. With water bodies running dry and crop investments completely lost, cultivators were driven to despair by relentless pressure from commercial banks and microfinance lenders. Instead of introducing comprehensive debt waivers, declaring disaster compensation, and providing psychological and economic support to rural households, the state leadership looked on as an indifferent spectator.
The opposition leader reaffirmed that the DMK would continuously fight for the dignity and survival of the agricultural community. Stalin demanded immediate debt cancellation for all cultivators, substantial financial assistance to bereaved families, and urgent systemic measures to revive the rural economy.
