DMK working president M.K. Stalin sharply criticized a series of central policy directives on April 19, 2017, that sought to mandate Hindi instruction in CBSE schools and encourage Union ministers to deliver speeches and official releases exclusively in Hindi. Stalin described these continuous administrative measures as covert and overt mechanisms of language imposition that undermine the federal compact. He asserted that educational choices and official communications must respect linguistic diversity rather than forcing uniformity on students and citizens.
Stalin noted that making Hindi compulsory in affiliated schools directly infringed upon the rights of students in non-Hindi speaking states, adding unfair academic burdens while sidelining regional mother tongues. Compelling central ministers to use only Hindi alienated millions of non-Hindi citizens who look to the central government for accessible, inclusive governance. He emphasized that communication in a multilingual democracy must be inclusive, transparent, and linguistically fair to all citizens across every state.
The opposition leader demanded the immediate withdrawal of all circulars and directives promoting Hindi dominance in education and administration. Stalin reiterated that the DMK would vigorously resist any intrusion into educational autonomy and linguistic equality in Tamil Nadu.
