Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a stern warning to the Union government on April 19, 2017, cautioning against any aggressive push to convert India into a monolingual Hindi nation. Stalin declared that systematic efforts to elevate Hindi at the expense of other national languages would inevitably provoke a fierce democratic backlash across Tamil Nadu, reminiscent of the historic anti-Hindi agitations of 1965. He made it clear that Tamil citizens would fiercely defend their linguistic identity against cultural hegemony.

Stalin recalled that Tamil Nadu's anti-Hindi movement was a seminal chapter in India's federal history, ensuring that non-Hindi speaking states retained their rightful place within the Union. By reopening linguistic divisions through executive notifications, the central government was recklessly endangering national unity and social harmony. He noted that India is a multicultural federation of diverse nationalities, not a unitary state bound by a single language or religion, and that any attempt to enforce uniformity would meet unyielding resistance.

The DMK leader called upon the Union government to halt its linguistic chauvinism immediately. Stalin declared that the DMK would mobilize youth and democratic forces statewide to protect the equal constitutional standing of all Indian languages.
