DMK working president M.K. Stalin spoke out strongly in an extensive interview with The Hindu on April 20, 2017, criticizing both warring factions of the ruling AIADMK for completely surrendering their political autonomy before the Bharatiya Janata Party. Stalin remarked that the internal factional warfare consuming the ruling dispensation had compromised Tamil Nadu's administrative sovereignty, leaving regional governance beholden to central political directives. He pointed out that competitive subservience among rival leaders had severely harmed the state's welfare.
Stalin elaborated that both AIADMK camps were actively negotiating in New Delhi rather than serving the electorate in Chennai. Critical state priorities—including severe agrarian drought relief, inter-state water rights, and exemption from NEET—were consistently subordinated to partisan calculations and personal immunity from central investigative probes. He underscored that regional political dignity, painstakingly fostered over decades through self-respect politics, was being systematically dismantled by leaders preoccupied solely with political survival.
The opposition leader reaffirmed that the DMK remained the authentic and principled defender of Tamil Nadu's autonomy and federal rights. Stalin maintained that only a decisive, progressive democratic mandate could restore accountable governance and end subservience to the Union government.
