DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced strong solidarity with medical students and resident doctors on April 21, 2017, criticizing the ruling AIADMK government for its inability to secure presidential assent for the state's NEET exemption legislation. Stalin observed that despite unanimous approval of two exemption bills in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, the state cabinet had failed to pursue the matter effectively with the Union government. This administrative weakness had thrown medical admissions into turmoil and forced doctors onto the streets.
Stalin emphasized that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test severely disadvantaged students from rural communities, state-board backgrounds, and marginalized socio-economic sections. By dismantling the state's established admission procedures, central authorities were eroding Tamil Nadu's hard-won educational self-determination and jeopardizing the future of regional public healthcare. He noted that aspiring doctors, who should be attending medical wards and lecture halls, were instead compelled to stage demonstrations due to the state government's inaction.
The opposition leader demanded that the Chief Minister travel to New Delhi to press for immediate presidential assent. Stalin pledged that the DMK would continue championing the cause of medical aspirants until comprehensive exemption from NEET is achieved.
