DMK working president M.K. Stalin addressed an explanatory public meeting on April 22, 2017, sharing the platform with leaders of various political parties to outline the objectives of the upcoming statewide general strike on April 25. Stalin explained that the unified shutdown was organized to awaken both central and state governments to the acute distress suffered by farmers facing historic drought, crop devastation, and mounting debt burdens. He urged citizens to unite across political lines for the farming community.
Stalin highlighted the critical demands of the agitation, which included the complete waiver of agricultural loans from nationalized and cooperative banks, the immediate distribution of comprehensive calamity relief funds, and institutional safeguards for inter-state river waters. He noted that farmers from Tamil Nadu had been forced to protest in New Delhi under desperate conditions without securing an audience with top executive authorities, reflecting an unacceptable disregard for southern agrarian distress by the Union government.
The DMK leader declared that the joint all-party mobilization reflected the collective will of seven crore Tamil citizens. Stalin affirmed that the upcoming bandh would be peaceful, disciplined, and resolute, demanding that the administration act decisively to save agriculture.
