DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK administration on April 28, 2017, for suppressing factual records on farmer suicides and making dismissive public statements about rural distress. Stalin stated that the state government had not only concealed the true scale of agrarian fatalities caused by catastrophic monsoon failures, but had also trivialized the tragic loss of human lives. He noted that dismissing farmers' deaths as routine occurrences caused by personal illnesses was deeply unconscionable.
Stalin pointed out that tens of thousands of farming households across the Cauvery delta, western belts, and southern plains were grappling with unpaid crop loans, dried borewells, and desiccated fields. When crop failure pushed breadwinners to despair, an elected government was obligated to provide compassionate financial support and debt relief. Instead, cabinet ministers demonstrated complete apathy, disputing official death tolls to evade administrative liability and protect their political standing before judicial scrutiny.
The opposition leader reaffirmed that the DMK would never permit the government to belittle the farming community's contributions or whitewash their suffering. He called for immediate, dignified state recognition of deceased farmers, debt cancellation, and comprehensive compensation for bereaved families across Tamil Nadu.
