DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound outrage on May 2, 2017, after the state government submitted a controversial affidavit in the Supreme Court claiming that no farmers had committed suicide due to drought. Stalin questioned how the administration could endorse such a blatant denial when rural families across the Cauvery delta and southern districts were mourning lost lives amidst unprecedented crop failures. He condemned the government's callous attempt to conceal rural tragedy from the highest judicial forum.
Stalin argued that the affidavit constituted an insult to grieving agrarian households struggling under unmanageable debt burdens and total harvest losses. By attributing farmer deaths to personal ailments rather than severe agrarian distress, the state leadership betrayed its primary responsibility to protect its farming community. The opposition leader recalled that ground reports and independent inquiries had repeatedly documented the devastating toll of the failed monsoon on rural livelihoods throughout Tamil Nadu.
Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK would continue to champion farmers' dignity and demand immediate comprehensive compensation. He called on the administration to retract its misleading judicial filings, acknowledge the harsh ground realities, and disburse equitable relief to every affected family.
