DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a passionate public call on May 8, 2017, under the rallying motto 'Save Water, Protect Generations,' urging citizens, youth, and civic groups across Tamil Nadu to join hands in comprehensive water conservation. The call formed the ideological foundation of the DMK Volunteers for Water movement, launched in response to the state's catastrophic drought crisis.
Stalin warned that chronic negligence of traditional water infrastructure, combined with changing climate patterns and recurrent monsoon failures, posed an existential threat to Tamil Nadu's agricultural food security and urban habitations. He argued that water conservation could no longer be treated as an optional administrative exercise; it had become a critical generational responsibility. Every conserved water body, deepened pond, and cleaned irrigation canal represented an investment in the future welfare and economic survival of succeeding generations.
The opposition leader urged party workers and ordinary citizens to transcend political affiliations and participate directly in local water revival efforts. He emphasized that community-led ecological restoration creates lasting resilience against climate shocks and governmental apathy. Stalin concluded that protecting water bodies is an indispensable moral duty to preserve the prosperity and dignity of Tamil Nadu.
