DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded the immediate dismissal of Social Welfare Minister V. Saroja from the Tamil Nadu cabinet on May 11, 2017, following serious criminal allegations of bribery and extortion. A senior female government official, Dharmapuri District Child Protection Officer Meenakshi, had submitted a formal police complaint accusing the minister of demanding a bribe of thirty lakh rupees and issuing life threats when she refused to comply.
Stalin stated that the extortion complaint lodged by an upright woman officer against a sitting cabinet minister exposed the depth of corruption pervading the AIADMK dispensation. He pointed out that while ordinary government servants are placed under immediate suspension upon facing corruption charges, a cabinet minister facing explicit extortion accusations remained protected by the Chief Minister. This double standard made a mockery of administrative integrity and state governance.
The opposition leader demanded that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami drop Minister Saroja from the council of ministers immediately to facilitate an independent, fair, and unhindered investigation by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. He warned that if the state administration failed to initiate prompt legal action, the DMK would pursue judicial remedies to ensure accountability.
