DMK working president M.K. Stalin appealed to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on May 15, 2017, urging the state administration to abandon false prestige and immediately concede the legitimate demands of striking state transport corporation workers. Stalin emphasized that the prolonged statewide bus strike had paralyzed public transportation, inflicting immense hardship on ordinary commuters, school students, office employees, and daily wage earners across Tamil Nadu.
Stalin pointed out that tens of thousands of transport employees were protesting over basic economic rights, including the non-disbursement of retirement benefits, provident fund dues, and revised wage settlements that had been arbitrarily withheld by the government. He criticized the administration for diverting thousands of crores from workers' statutory provident funds and life insurance premiums into operational expenses without employee consent. Rather than negotiating in good faith, the state government threatened employees with disciplinary notices and ESMA provisions.
The opposition leader asserted that a responsible government must resolve labor disputes through empathetic dialogue rather than authoritarian intimidation. He demanded an immediate tripartite meeting between transport unions, department secretaries, and the Chief Minister to disburse statutory dues. Stalin warned that continuing administrative obstinacy would only deepen public misery and labor unrest.
