DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a sharp rebuttal on May 15, 2017, strongly condemning Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Union ministers for attempting to claim political ownership over the Chennai Metro Rail project. Speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of the first underground section of the metro, Stalin remarked that the Chief Minister was engaged in naming a child he never bore by falsely attributing the modern mass transit infrastructure to former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Stalin presented historical facts demonstrating that the comprehensive Chennai Metro Rail project was conceived, planned, and sanctioned under the DMK government headed by M. Karunanidhi in 2007. As local administration minister and deputy chief minister, Stalin had personally negotiated funding agreements with the Japan International Cooperation Agency and supervised the commencement of tunneling works. By contrast, the AIADMK regime consistently delayed project approvals, terminated contracts prematurely, and stalled implementation for political spite.

The opposition leader stated that attempting to rewrite contemporary administrative history reflects deep political dishonesty and insecurity. He declared that the citizens of Chennai were fully aware of who genuinely envisioned and executed modern urban infrastructure for Tamil Nadu.
