DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound satisfaction on May 15, 2017, after reviewing the successful completion of community desilting operations at crucial water storage tanks located across the Saidapet and Kolathur assembly constituencies in Chennai. Stalin received an enthusiastic and affectionate welcome from local residents and community elders who gathered in large numbers to express their appreciation for restoring local water reservoirs.

Stalin noted that urban reservoirs and neighborhood temple tanks play an indispensable role in preventing urban flash floods during heavy downpours while actively recharging local groundwater tables during parched summer months. Neglected for years by municipal authorities, these vital urban tanks had become choked with garbage, urban runoff, and heavy silt. The DMK Volunteers for Water campaign mobilized earthmoving equipment and dedicated volunteer squads to clear debris, deepen the tank floors, and construct secure peripheral retaining walls.

The opposition leader emphasized that participatory civic intervention provides effective solutions to acute urban water stress. He criticized the municipal corporation and the state administration for chronic indifference toward urban ecological management. Stalin asserted that the DMK would continue standing alongside urban residents, executing essential public works and holding administrative agencies accountable for urban civic welfare.
