DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Thennur on May 17, 2017, to inspect the dramatic revival of a major water storage tank that had remained completely neglected and undesilted for seventy-seven years. The successful restoration was achieved through the concentrated labor of local agriculturalists, civil society volunteers, and DMK cadres operating under the party's statewide DMK Volunteers for Water initiative.
Stalin observed that the water body had lost virtually all holding capacity over nearly eight decades of unaddressed silt accumulation, leaving surrounding farmlands vulnerable to acute drought and groundwater exhaustion. Through systematic excavation, channel clearing, and bund reconstruction, the community initiative transformed the degraded site into a functional reservoir capable of storing millions of liters of seasonal monsoon rainwater. He commended the volunteers for demonstrating what dedicated collective effort could accomplish even in the complete absence of state government support.
The opposition leader stated that reviving historic water architecture is crucial for Tamil Nadu's long-term environmental sustainability and agrarian survival. He pointed out that while the AIADMK administration squandered public funds on superficial announcements, grassroots mobilization delivered enduring community assets. Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's commitment to spearheading decentralized water rejuvenation drives across every vulnerable rural district.
