DMK working president M.K. Stalin participated in extensive community water desilting operations at Kulithalai on May 17, 2017, expressing deep personal elation as party volunteers deepened irrigation tanks that provide water security to over fifteen thousand agricultural acres. Kulithalai holds profound historical significance for the Dravidian movement as the first legislative assembly constituency to elect DMK president M. Karunanidhi to the Madras Legislative Assembly in 1957.

Stalin noted that sixty years after Karunanidhi's historic electoral victory, returning to Kulithalai to execute vital water conservation works was an emotional and fulfilling experience. The community desilting initiative was carried out under the statewide DMK Volunteers for Water campaign, designed to mitigate the severe agrarian drought gripping the Cauvery delta region. By removing silt deposits and clearing feeder channels, the project restored irrigation capacity to ensure local farming communities can harvest seasonal rainfall effectively.

The opposition leader commended the tireless labor of local farmers, party cadres, and engineering volunteers. He emphasized that genuine public service consists of practical interventions that solve pressing agrarian challenges. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK would continue to honor Karunanidhi's developmental legacy through community action.
