Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin questioned Tamil Nadu cabinet ministers on May 18, 2017, regarding their repeated official visits to the national capital. Stalin observed that while state ministers routinely announced that they traveled to New Delhi to secure administrative funds, they maintained complete silence on pressing existential issues confronting Tamil Nadu, including severe agricultural drought, medical entrance mandates, and controversial hydrocarbon exploration projects.

Stalin pointed out that farmers across the Cauvery delta were reeling from total crop loss and unprecedented agrarian indebtedness, yet the state government failed to secure vital drought relief assistance from the central calamity fund. Similarly, the unilateral imposition of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test severely disadvantaged rural government school students, while hydrocarbon drilling in Neduvasal threatened agricultural livelihoods. Despite these urgent crises, ministers avoided confronting central authorities to safeguard state interests.

The opposition leader characterized the ministers' passive conduct in New Delhi as an abdication of constitutional duty. He asserted that true state representatives must courageously voice regional grievances rather than seeking personal political patronage. Stalin demanded that the government present a formal white paper detailing central funds released and policy representations submitted during ministerial visits.
