DMK working president M.K. Stalin called for the complete and uncompromising enforcement of the Tamil Learning Act on May 19, 2017, demanding that Tamil be taught as a compulsory subject across all primary and secondary schools in the state, including CBSE and ICSE institutions. The landmark legislation, originally enacted under the DMK government headed by M. Karunanidhi in 2006, mandated mother tongue education across all educational streams.
Stalin pointed out that private school managements affiliated with central educational boards frequently sought exemptions and circumvented state statutory obligations, thereby denying students the foundational opportunity to study the regional language. He argued that learning Tamil does not impede global competitiveness but rather enhances cognitive development and cultural grounding. Neglecting statutory language requirements undermined the legislative sovereignty of the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
The opposition leader urged the state administration to establish rigorous inspection mechanisms to ensure that every school operating within Tamil Nadu complies strictly with statutory language mandates. He asserted that no private educational institution should be permitted to flout state legislation with impunity. Stalin affirmed that the DMK would continue to champion linguistic rights and defend Tamil education across all forums.
