Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded condemnation on May 20, 2017, following a brutal police baton charge against women demonstrating against a state-run TASMAC liquor retail outlet at Alinjikuppam near Ambur. Stalin characterized the violent police action against unarmed female protesters as an appalling assault on basic democratic rights and human dignity.

Stalin pointed out that following a Supreme Court directive ordering the closure of liquor vends along national highways, the state administration recklessly relocated alcohol outlets into residential streets, school zones, and rural neighborhoods. Local women, fearing for domestic safety, daily harassment, and children's welfare, organized peaceful democratic sit-ins demanding the closure of the relocated outlet. Instead of hearing their legitimate grievances, the administration unleashed armed police to violently suppress their peaceful protest.

The opposition leader demanded immediate disciplinary action against the police officials responsible for ordering the brutal baton charge. He asserted that an administration that uses physical violence against mothers and working women to protect liquor revenues has completely lost its moral right to govern. Stalin reiterated the DMK's firm commitment to phase-wise prohibition and defending neighborhood safety across the state.
