DMK working president M.K. Stalin inaugurated community desilting works at the historic Vadivudaiamman temple tank in Thandalam panchayat, Kanchipuram district, on May 21, 2017. The initiative marked another major milestone in the statewide DMK Volunteers for Water campaign, designed to restore dried-up civic and agricultural water bodies amidst the worst drought recorded in Tamil Nadu in decades.
Stalin observed that centuries-old temple tanks historically functioned as essential percolation reservoirs, capturing surface runoff to recharge surrounding groundwater aquifers. Over decades of neglect and administrative apathy, thick silt deposits and unmonitored vegetation had drastically reduced their holding capacity, depriving surrounding rural habitations of essential potable water. By deploying earthmoving equipment and coordinating voluntary cadre brigades, the party aimed to deepen the tank basin and reinforce peripheral bunds before seasonal rains commenced.
The opposition leader commended village residents and party cadres for demonstrating immense civic dedication through direct physical labor. He criticized the state government for its lethargic response to the statewide water crisis, stating that political distraction had paralyzed official desilting schemes. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK would continue community-driven conservation initiatives to secure water resilience for rural Tamil Nadu.
