DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited the Sholinganallur legislative constituency on the morning of May 25, 2017, to inspect water bodies that had been successfully desilted and rejuvenated by DMK cadres and community volunteers. The inspection formed part of the statewide DMK Volunteers for Water initiative, launched to combat the worst drought confronting Tamil Nadu in over a century.

Stalin walked along the cleared embankments and deepened basins of several neighborhood ponds, reviewing the volume of silt removed and evaluating structural bund reinforcements. He praised local party functionaries, youth volunteers, and neighborhood residents for completing the restorative works through voluntary labor and community contributions without depending on stalled government machinery. The deepened ponds would now trap seasonal monsoon runoff, replenishing dried neighborhood wells and mitigating acute drinking water scarcity across peri-urban settlements.

The opposition leader emphasized that water conservation is an essential civic duty that transcends party politics. He criticized the state government for failing to execute basic desilting operations across thousands of traditional water storage bodies statewide. Stalin pledged that the DMK would continue mobilizing public participation to protect water bodies and secure ecological resources for future generations.
