DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded the immediate and unconditional repeal of the central cattle trade regulation on May 26, 2017, asserting that the notification directly infringed upon the fundamental rights of Indian citizens to make their own food choices. Stalin emphasized that state interference in dietary practices was completely incompatible with constitutional democracy and personal liberty.
Stalin highlighted the acute economic devastation the new regulations would inflict on rural communities. Millions of farmers rely on selling aged livestock to overcome crop failures and debt distress, while meat and leather industries provide livelihoods to vulnerable social sections, including minorities and Dalits. By imposing impossible conditions on cattle markets, the central government created severe livelihood uncertainty for agricultural laborers and commercial traders throughout Tamil Nadu.
The opposition leader called upon the Union government to recognize the widespread public anger sparked by the arbitrary rules and withdraw them immediately. He stated that the DMK would organize public protests, legal challenges, and regional political resistance until the notification was rescinded. Stalin reaffirmed that individual freedom of choice and economic survival of rural workers must be defended against authoritarian governance directives.
