Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the state police on May 29, 2017, for arresting May 17 Movement coordinator Thirumurugan Gandhi and three fellow activists under the draconian provisions of the Goondas Act. The activists had been detained for attempting to hold a memorial candle-lighting event on Marina beach to commemorate Tamil war victims of the Sri Lankan civil conflict. Stalin described the state's punitive action as an unconstitutional attempt to muzzle democratic dissent and silence political expression.

Stalin pointed out that peaceful assembly and commemorative gatherings are legitimate constitutional rights guaranteed to all citizens. Invoking preventive detention legislation intended for hardened criminals and habitual offenders against civil rights activists demonstrated administrative insecurity and authoritarian excess. He criticized the AIADMK administration for turning Tamil Nadu into a police state where democratic activists were subjected to vindictive legal persecution while essential law enforcement tasks were neglected.

The opposition leader demanded the immediate revocation of the Goondas Act detention orders and the unconditional release of Thirumurugan Gandhi and his associates. He warned that suppressing lawful protests through punitive laws would only intensify democratic agitation. Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's commitment to defending constitutional liberties and opposing state-sponsored political harassment.
