DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited the hospital on May 31, 2017, to check on the condition of R. Sooraj, a doctoral research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras who had been brutally assaulted by right-wing elements. Sooraj sustained severe eye injuries after being attacked on campus for participating in a peaceful campus discussion and food event regarding dietary choices and central cattle sale regulations.

Stalin strongly condemned the violent assault, describing it as an intolerable attack on campus democracy, personal liberty, and the fundamental right to individual food choices. He expressed deep alarm that premier educational institutions were being transformed into spaces of physical intimidation and ideological policing. Stalin met with Sooraj's attending physicians and family members, assuring them of full legal and medical assistance from the DMK.

The opposition leader demanded prompt police intervention and the arrest of all individuals responsible for the heinous assault. He criticized institute authorities and state law enforcement for initial complacency, warning that student safety must be safeguarded unconditionally. Stalin reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu would never tolerate vigilante intimidation on university campuses.
