Willful erosion of States Rights by Centre which seeks to establish a Monolith will only incite a renewed War of Independence.

Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strong warning on June 4, 2017, against the central government's systematic attempts to encroach upon state autonomy and enforce political homogeneity across India. Stalin declared that willful erosion of states' rights by central authorities seeking to establish a monolithic administrative structure would inevitably incite renewed struggles for democratic freedom and regional self-determination.

Stalin argued that India's constitutional framework was intentionally established as a union of diverse states, celebrating linguistic, cultural, and regional distinctions. Encroaching upon state jurisdictions—whether through centralized taxation like the Goods and Services Tax, uniform educational eligibility like the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, or cultural mandates—destabilizes the federal compact. He asserted that imposing uniformity upon a deeply pluralistic society threatens national unity rather than preserving it.

The opposition leader stressed that the DMK would spearhead democratic resistance alongside other regional movements to defend the federal character of the Indian republic. He called upon national leadership to respect cooperative federalism and preserve constitutional state powers. Stalin concluded that true national strength emerges from empowered states and regional institutions rather than concentrated central authority.
