DMK working president M.K. Stalin sent an urgent appeal on June 6, 2017, to Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, requesting diplomatic protection for Indian citizens, especially Tamil expatriates, residing and working in Qatar. Stalin raised concerns following the decision of a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states to sever diplomatic, economic, and transport ties with Qatar, creating severe logistical uncertainty and regional disruption.
Stalin pointed out that hundreds of thousands of Tamil nationals are employed across Qatar in construction, engineering, healthcare, hospitality, and domestic sectors. The sudden closure of land borders and airspace restrictions generated widespread anxiety regarding food supply chains, employment stability, currency remittances, and travel permissions. He urged the Ministry of External Affairs to establish 24-hour helplines and maintain close liaison with the Indian Embassy in Doha.
The DMK leader emphasized that the safety, welfare, and legal security of expatriate workers must be the government's foremost foreign policy priority during international crises. He expressed confidence that prompt diplomatic communication would prevent hardship for migrant families. Stalin reiterated the DMK's dedication to monitoring the situation closely and assisting distressed expatriate communities.
