DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Semmampalayam in Erode district on June 6, 2017, to inspect ongoing desilting operations at a local water tank. The desilting initiative was organized and executed by DMK district cadres and local volunteers as part of the broader DMK Volunteers for Water program. Stalin reviewed the earthmoving work, channel clearing, and embankment stabilization being carried out across the site.
Stalin observed that severe drought conditions across western Tamil Nadu demanded immediate community action to restore traditional irrigation tanks and reservoirs. By removing accumulated silt and debris, the restored water body would substantially increase rainwater retention during subsequent monsoon rains, replenishing local wells and surrounding agricultural borewells. He commended the party volunteers and farming communities for working collectively without waiting for government machinery.
The opposition leader reaffirmed that the DMK's water restoration movement was designed to deliver tangible relief to rural households facing groundwater depletion. He criticized the state government for its apathy toward water infrastructure maintenance, asserting that community mobilization filled an administrative void. Stalin concluded that safeguarding natural water bodies remains a paramount civic priority for Tamil Nadu.
