DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Thandalam on the morning of June 9, 2017, to inspect the successful completion of desilting operations at the local temple tank. Stalin had formally inaugurated the volunteer desilting initiative on May 21 as part of the statewide DMK Volunteers for Water campaign. He commended party workers, local residents, and engineering volunteers for finishing the deepening and bund strengthening work ahead of the monsoon season.
Stalin observed that civil society mobilization had become indispensable due to the state government's failure to maintain local water bodies during a historic drought. The restored Thandalam tank will now hold substantially more rainwater, recharging local groundwater aquifers and providing clean water for the surrounding rural settlement. He noted that community-driven water preservation represents the DMK's practical dedication to grassroots public welfare.
The opposition leader reiterated that despite holding opposition status, the DMK would continue executing water conservation drives across all districts. He called upon local panchayats and community organizations to protect water bodies from encroachment and contamination. Stalin concluded that collective civic action remains the most reliable safeguard against chronic water scarcity in Tamil Nadu.
