DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized the ruling AIADMK government on June 9, 2017, for exhibiting gross negligence regarding water management and water conservation across Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that the administration demonstrated a callous attitude by abandoning proactive water security schemes previously formulated under the leadership of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. In particular, he cited stalled intra-state river interlinking projects and neglected water body desilting as grave administrative failures.
Stalin noted that recurring droughts and agricultural distress in Tamil Nadu demanded urgent execution of comprehensive irrigation infrastructure. Previous DMK administrations had conceived river linking networks, such as the Cauvery-Gundar link, alongside massive seasonal desilting drives to store monsoon run-off effectively. By contrast, the incumbent government allowed irrigation channels, lakes, and temple tanks to silt up, drastically reducing storage capacity.
The opposition leader urged the state administration to abandon political pettiness and revive long-term water conservation schemes formulated during Karunanidhi's tenure. He stressed that preserving water resources is an existential issue for Tamil Nadu's farming community and urban centers. Stalin pledged that the DMK would continue advocating for proactive water stewardship.
