DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a statement on June 9, 2017, strongly condemning the Malaysian authorities for intercepting and detaining Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Expressing fraternal solidarity, Stalin conveyed deep dismay on behalf of the DMK over the abrupt treatment meted out to a senior political leader from Tamil Nadu.
Vaiko had traveled to Malaysia to attend a private social function following an invitation from Penang Deputy Chief Minister P. Ramasamy. However, immigration officials detained him upon arrival, citing administrative blacklist notices relating to his past advocacy for Sri Lankan Tamil rights. Stalin criticized the detention as unjustified, noting that Vaiko was an invited guest visiting the country for peaceful community interactions rather than political disruption.
Stalin called upon the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi to intervene diplomatically to ensure the safety, dignity, and prompt return of the veteran political leader. He emphasized that Indian public representatives deserve international respect and diplomatic protection when traveling abroad. The DMK reaffirmed its enduring commitment to standing beside Tamil leaders facing arbitrary overseas restrictions.
