DMK working president M.K. Stalin commended party cadres and citizen volunteers on June 16, 2017, as the party's statewide water conservation initiative reached peak momentum across Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that desilting, deepening, and bund reinforcement works across hundreds of community ponds, irrigation tanks, and traditional stepwells were progressing at full speed in nearly every district, offering vital drought mitigation without relying on sluggish state bureaucracy.

Stalin observed that the ruling AIADMK government had completely neglected routine water body maintenance, allowing essential village tanks to silt up and natural channels to become clogged with waste and encroachment. Recognizing the severe distress faced by farmers and rural households due to acute drinking water shortages, the DMK mobilized dedicated cadres, local farmers, and earth-moving machinery to voluntarily restore water infrastructure. Stalin emphasized that this people-led ecological movement demonstrated the party's deep-rooted commitment to practical public service and regional ecological resilience.
