DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a statement on June 18, 2017, drawing attention to authentic audio and video recordings that exposed shocking bribery and horse-trading among AIADMK legislators during their confinement at the Koovathur luxury resort in February. Stalin asserted that these unvarnished recordings provided irrefutable visual and auditory proof that the confidence vote won by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami was purchased through illicit cash payments and gold distribution.
The opposition leader stated that the recordings featured ruling party legislators explicitly discussing huge sums of money, promissory notes, and promised kickbacks in exchange for their floor votes. Such brazen commercialization of parliamentary democracy reduced constitutional governance to an open auction, eroding the legitimacy of the entire state administration. Stalin emphasized that keeping elected representatives captive behind resort gates and bribing them to sustain an illegitimate ministry was an unforgivable betrayal of Tamil Nadu voters.
Stalin demanded an immediate court-monitored investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the Koovathur corruption tapes. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently pursue constitutional and legal mechanisms to dismantle this corrupt regime.
