DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a scathing statement on June 19, 2017, condemning the AIADMK government for recklessly passing the state Goods and Services Tax Bill without comprehensive consultations or diligent legislative review. Stalin pointed out that GST represents the most radical transformation of India's fiscal landscape since Independence, capable of turning regional economies upside down, yet the state ministry rammed the bill through the assembly in hasty disregard of public sentiment.
The opposition leader stated that small merchants, manufacturing entrepreneurs, and working-class families faced immense uncertainty over steep tax rates and complicated digital filing requirements. Rather than organizing detailed hearings with industry chambers, textile unions, and retail trade bodies, the ruling dispensation treated the legislation as a routine formality to appease the central government. Stalin emphasized that surrendered state taxing autonomy without securing robust revenue safeguards would severely constrict Tamil Nadu's welfare spending and economic autonomy for decades.
Stalin urged the government to press for immediate corrections in the GST Council to shield vulnerable sectors from inflationary shocks. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion fair trade and economic stability.
