DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin led a walkout of opposition members from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on June 19, 2017, after the state government hastily passed the Tamil Nadu Goods and Services Tax Bill without referring it to a Select Committee. Stalin condemned the treasury benches for steamrolling far-reaching fiscal legislation despite widespread protests, strikes, and serious apprehensions voiced by traders, micro-enterprises, and industrial associations.
The opposition leader argued that a fundamental restructuring of state taxation required meticulous parliamentary review and detailed consultation with business stakeholders. The DMK had demanded that the draft bill be referred to a bipartisan Select Committee to examine its economic repercussions on small merchants, regional textile hubs, and cottage industries. Stalin highlighted that ignoring legitimate merchant concerns and ramming through complex tax statutes without committee scrutiny demonstrated authoritarian executive conduct and total indifference to trade livelihoods.
Stalin declared that bypassing legislative scrutiny compromised the state's economic stability and democratic conventions. He pledged that the DMK will persistently stand with traders and small entrepreneurs against punitive fiscal regulations that stifle local enterprise.
