DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin raised a vital constitutional demand inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on June 20, 2017. Rising during proceedings, Stalin urged the state government to introduce and pass a unanimous legislative resolution firmly opposing the Union Ministry of Environment's notification restricting cattle trade for slaughter at animal markets, asserting that the decree infringed on personal liberty and state legislative domain.
The opposition leader stated that the central notification directly interfered with citizens' fundamental dietary habits, crushed the rural agrarian economy, and threatened millions employed in the livestock and leather manufacturing industries. Neighbouring states like Kerala had already passed unanimous assembly resolutions challenging the notification as unconstitutional overreach into state subjects. Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu must demonstrate identical legislative spine and assert its constitutional powers over animal husbandry and agriculture without yielding to ideological centralization from New Delhi.
Stalin demanded that the Chief Minister take an unequivocal stand in defense of federalism and citizen freedoms. The DMK reaffirmed its commitment to leading democratic resistance against laws infringing upon individual autonomy. He stressed that democratic governance demands respect for regional dietary traditions.
