DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin led a walkout of opposition lawmakers from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on June 20, 2017. Stalin condemned the ruling AIADMK administration for acting as a submissive mouthpiece for the central BJP government rather than taking decisive legislative action to defend state rights, dietary freedom, and agrarian livelihoods against controversial central cattle trade restrictions.
The opposition leader stated that the Union government's notification regulating cattle slaughter severely hurt small farmers, cattle rearers, butchers, and leather industry workers across the state. While other state assemblies convened special sessions and passed resolutions asserting regional jurisdiction over animal husbandry and agriculture, the AIADMK ministry refused even to permit debate on the subject. Stalin argued that by continually singing praises of central rulers instead of safeguarding state interests, the ruling dispensation functioned merely as a puppet administration compromising regional dignity.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK will not remain silent while state autonomy and secular freedoms are systematically dismantled. He reiterated the party's unwavering resolve to defend constitutional federalism and protect the livelihoods of vulnerable rural communities.
