DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a bold challenge to the ruling AIADMK on June 21, 2017, demanding that the state administration stop delaying local body elections. Stalin asserted that if the government possessed the democratic courage to announce the election dates even by tomorrow, the DMK was fully prepared to contest and defeat the ruling regime across every panchayat, municipality, and municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu.
The opposition leader pointed out that the government had deliberately suppressed grassroots democracy by evading local elections for months under the pretext of administrative boundary delimitations. In the absence of elected mayors, municipal chairpersons, and panchayat presidents, local self-government institutions were paralyzed, leaving public health, sanitation, street lighting, and civic works in complete disarray under unaccountable bureaucratic administrators. Stalin emphasized that the AIADMK was evading the ballot box out of sheer panic, knowing that citizens were eager to vote them out.
Stalin affirmed that grassroots democracy must be restored without further judicial or administrative evasion. He reiterated that the DMK cadres stand mobilized to re-establish accountable, people-centric municipal and village governance across the state.
