DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin raised the preservation of the Keezhadi archaeological excavations in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on June 22, 2017. Urging urgent executive intervention, Stalin demanded that the state administration allocate sufficient funding, logistical backing, and institutional support to ensure that archaeological excavations in Sivaganga district proceed without interruption or bureaucratic interference.
The opposition leader stated that Keezhadi's remarkable subterranean discoveries, including advanced brick structures, drainage networks, pottery with Tamil-Brahmi script, and urban artifacts, provide undeniable material proof of a literate, urban Sangam-era civilization flourishing along the Vaigai river basin over two millennia ago. Stalin expressed deep dismay over attempts by the Archaeological Survey of India to delay subsequent excavation phases and transfer leading researchers, noting that uncovering Tamil antiquities must not be obstructed by political prejudice or institutional neglect.
Stalin urged the state government to take direct responsibility by establishing a state archaeological center and museum at Keezhadi. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend Tamil cultural identity and ensure that ancient heritage is recognized globally. He reiterated that uncovering historical truth must remain an enduring priority for Tamil Nadu.
