DMK working president M.K. Stalin conducted an extensive inspection of water conservation initiatives across Tiruvallur district on June 25, 2017. Visiting Poondi, Tiruttani, and Podaturpet, Stalin inspected multiple historic temple ponds and community water reservoirs that had been taken up for comprehensive desilting and deepening by DMK cadres and local citizen volunteers during the severe drought.
Stalin observed that voluntary desilting had removed deep layers of compacted silt, restored natural inlet channels, and fortified earthen bunds to maximize rainwater capture during upcoming monsoons. He commended the dedicated party volunteers and rural residents who contributed labor and heavy machinery without relying on sluggish state machinery. Stalin highlighted that Tiruvallur district serves as a vital hydrological catchment for Chennai's drinking water needs and local agriculture, making local water body rejuvenation essential for regional water security.
Stalin reiterated that decentralized water harvesting represents the most effective safeguard against groundwater depletion and agrarian distress. He reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently champion community water restoration initiatives across all districts in Tamil Nadu to secure sustainable water futures for future generations. He emphasized that local water storage remains crucial for sustainable community development.
