DMK working president M.K. Stalin submitted a formal representation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 27, 2017, urging the Union government to expedite the long-delayed Inter-State River Linking Programme. Stalin highlighted that connecting major peninsular rivers is an urgent national priority essential for mitigating recurrent droughts, managing devastating flood cycles, and safeguarding the livelihood security of millions of farming families across southern states.
The opposition leader pointed out that agrarian communities in Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions face catastrophic distress due to erratic monsoons, upstream river impoundments, and declining groundwater tables. Peninsular river interlinking, particularly linking the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Pennar, and Cauvery rivers, would transfer surplus monsoon runoff to water-deficit basins, revitalizing millions of acres of parched cultivable land. Stalin emphasized that national food security and agrarian economic stability depend heavily on implementing sustainable multi-state water sharing infrastructure.
Stalin called upon the Prime Minister to allocate dedicated central budgetary resources and establish a statutory implementation authority to accelerate project execution. He reaffirmed the DMK's steadfast commitment to pursuing transformative water infrastructure solutions that guarantee sustainable prosperity for farmers across the country.
