DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin raised the explosive Gutkha bribery scandal inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on June 29, 2017. Demanding immediate government accountability, Stalin insisted that criminal action be initiated against the cabinet minister and top-ranking police officers implicated in receiving over forty crore rupees in illegal payouts from manufacturers of banned tobacco products.
The opposition leader stated that official communications from the Income Tax department detailing specific payoffs, book entries, and names of culpable officials had reached the state secretariat months earlier. However, the government deliberately suppressed the investigative findings rather than registering formal cases or suspending the tainted personnel. Stalin pointed out that while ordinary citizens were subjected to stringent law enforcement, powerful ministers and high-ranking police brass operated with total impunity, enabling contraband trade to flourish statewide.
Stalin urged the assembly to uphold parliamentary dignity by taking prompt cognizance of the documented evidence. He demanded a comprehensive probe by an independent investigative agency to dismantle the criminal-political nexus and restore institutional integrity to the state police department. He reiterated that public trust in policing depends entirely on impartial accountability.
