DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on July 1, 2017, that the ruling AIADMK government accept complete responsibility and answer to the public for the severe disruptions caused by the ill-prepared rollout of Goods and Services Tax in Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that implementing complex tax legislation without adequate technical readiness, training, or stakeholder consultation had created widespread panic among traders, manufacturers, and ordinary consumers.
The opposition leader stated that while the AIADMK had previously expressed reservations regarding GST's impact on state fiscal autonomy, it meekly surrendered state prerogatives and rushed the legislation through the legislative assembly without committee scrutiny. As a result, small manufacturers, textile units, and retail shops were confronted with unworkable compliance hurdles overnight. Stalin pointed out that the state government failed to build necessary digital systems or establish guidance centers to assist regional businesses in navigating the transition.
Stalin asserted that the state administration cannot evade accountability for the resulting economic slowdown. He urged the government to press the GST Council for urgent rate rationalization and procedural exemptions for small businesses. The DMK will continue championing trader rights.
