DMK working president M.K. Stalin urged the Union government on July 1, 2017, to immediately initiate direct talks with distressed merchants, small retailers, and various trade bodies affected by the Goods and Services Tax. Stalin stressed that the central administration must urgently listen to the concerns of commercial communities and accommodate their reasonable demands to prevent widespread economic hardship across regional markets.
The opposition leader pointed out that hasty implementation of complex multi-tier tax rates, rigid digital compliance mandates, and penal provisions had thrown retail markets into severe chaos. Small traders, unorganized businesses, and micro-enterprises lacking computer infrastructure were disproportionately burdened by bureaucratic red tape. Stalin noted that instead of easing the transition through constructive dialogue and transitional relief, central authorities adopted an inflexible stance that crippled retail commerce and generated widespread anxiety among business owners.
Stalin demanded that the Union Ministry of Finance convene an urgent consultative meeting with trade representatives to simplify compliance procedures and reduce tax slabs on essential goods. The DMK reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for small businesses and protecting commercial livelihoods. He reiterated that economic policies must support, rather than crush, grassroots traders and commercial enterprises.
