DMK working president M.K. Stalin inaugurated an ambitious ecological initiative in Saidapet constituency on July 1, 2017, aimed at planting one hundred thousand saplings to transform the urban environment. Launching the drive under the theme "We are ready to make Saidapet green! Are you ready?", Stalin rallied local residents, youth volunteers, and civic workers to take collective ownership of urban greenery.
The opposition leader stated that Chennai and its surrounding metropolitan areas urgently need extensive tree canopies to counter rising urban temperatures, combat vehicular pollution, and replenish depleted groundwater tables. He emphasized that large-scale environmental improvement cannot succeed through government pronouncements alone; it demands energetic citizen mobilization, responsible neighborhood stewardship, and ongoing sapling care. Stalin distributed saplings to local families, urging every household to plant and nurture trees in residential areas, school premises, and community parks.
Stalin commended the organizers for designing a grassroots model of sustainable urban living. He affirmed that the DMK will continue to initiate practical environmental programs that directly improve public health, environmental resilience, and civic pride across Tamil Nadu's urban constituencies. He stressed that local ecological stewardship remains vital for building healthy, livable urban neighborhoods.
