DMK working president M.K. Stalin called upon party cadres and the public on July 1, 2017, to launch a massive statewide tree planting campaign to expand green cover across Tamil Nadu. Building on the remarkable civic success of the DMK's voluntary water body desilting drive, which rejuvenated hundreds of community ponds and lakes during acute drought, Stalin urged citizens to plant saplings in every neighborhood.

The opposition leader stated that ecological preservation requires sustained community action alongside water management. Climate change, deforestation, and prolonged dry spells underscored the urgent necessity of restoring green cover in urban centers and rural belts alike. Stalin pointed out that just as DMK volunteers mobilized across districts with shovels and machinery to desilt water bodies without government assistance, they must now spearhead afforestation efforts to protect local microclimates and enhance groundwater recharge.

Stalin appealed to youth, students, and civic groups to actively participate in the green initiative. He affirmed that environmental protection is an integral component of sustainable development and community welfare. The DMK reaffirmed its commitment to ecological stewardship across Tamil Nadu. He urged every citizen to plant a sapling to secure our environmental future.
