Joint opposition presidential candidate Meira Kumar met DMK working president M.K. Stalin at the party headquarters in Chennai on the evening of July 1, 2017, to formally seek the DMK's support for the upcoming presidential election. Receiving the distinguished former Lok Sabha Speaker, Stalin assured her of the party's unanimous and resolute backing, emphasizing that the DMK stands firmly with national secular forces.
Stalin noted that Meira Kumar represents the shared values of democratic inclusion, social justice, and constitutional secularism championed by seventeen opposition parties across the nation. During their discussions, both leaders underscored the critical importance of preserving India's pluralistic fabric, federal autonomy, and democratic institutions against growing centralization. Stalin commended Kumar for her distinguished public career, her dignified parliamentary service, and her consistent advocacy for marginalized communities.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK's lawmakers would vote unitedly for Meira Kumar to uphold constitutional morality. He reiterated that the DMK will actively coordinate with like-minded regional and national parties to consolidate secular votes. The meeting reinforced the growing unity among opposition parties defending democratic principles across India. He called upon all regional parties to unite in this crucial presidential battle.
